Thank you so much for stopping by my little corner of the Internet! I’m a portrait photographer servicing Northeastern North Carolina (that’s Moyock, Currituck, Camden, Elizabeth City, and the Outer Banks) in addition to Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Suffolk, Virginia. I work on location as well as in our studio, conveniently located in Moyock, a few miles from the VA state line. I am a member of the following professional and community organizations: Professional Photographers of America, National Association of Professional Child Photographers, Nikon Professional Services, Clickin Moms, Red Thread Sessions, HeARTs Speak, Currituck Chamber of Commerce, and Moyock Woman’s Club.
My husband, Steve, and I were married in 1990. We welcomed our son into our family when we became foster parents in 2006. Cody was almost 5 at the time, and we finalized his adoption in 2010. Our family is completed with our three pups, Polly and Reuben, who are siblings, and Leland. (Can you name the movie their names came from?) They were adopted from the Currituck Animal Shelter, and are all spoiled rotten – we wouldn’t have it any other way!
Cody’s difficult beginning in life has severely impacted his self-worth. His therapist advised us to have photos in prominent areas of our home, so I began capturing tons of images!
Only, the pictures I took weren’t coming out how I imagined. For our twentieth anniversary in March 2010, I asked for a DSLR camera – you know, one with lenses that could be changed. That’s how to get the pretty pictures I imagined! Cody was so happy to give me my gift! It didn’t take long before my family grew tired of me taking their pictures. Photography has been important to me since I was young - I even wanted to be a photographer for National Geographic, and my first job was at Old Time Photos at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. I found my passion for photography reignited! I began doing it for others and building a portfolio, eventually leading me to start a business.
Michelle Kirnan Photography was officially established in 2011. Since then, I’ve been led to specialize in creating portraits for high school seniors and families. As an adoptive mother who struggled for so many years to have a family, I feel that our children provide our purpose in life. Shouldn't we surround ourselves, in our homes and everyday life, with the love of our family as showcased in portraits? Our family is our masterpiece!
